Description

Hypertrophic scar is an abberation of normal wound healing. It developes as a result of hypertrophy of mature fibroblast in hypertrophic scar. It occurs from prolonged inflamatory phase of wound healing. Excessive extracellular matrix combined with inadequate remodeling of scar tissue results in an aesthetically and functionally unsatisfactory, painful, pruritic scar that can impair function. Precipitating factors include scar crossing normal skin crease, scar over sternum or joints and young persons. Treatment is often not necessary it may require stocking, elastic bandage, excision, silicone application, topical retinoids or intralesional steroids.
